Class Actions

Why do class action settlements pay individuals so little?

I received a settlement check for a few dollars, but the news said the total settlement was in the millions. Where did the money go?

Large total figures are often divided among a very large number of class members. From the total, courts typically approve deductions for lawyers’ fees, administration costs (mailing notices, processing claims), and sometimes small awards for the named class representatives.

Class actions are often designed for situations where each person’s loss is small, so individual lawsuits would not be practical. The value lies partly in compensation and partly in stopping the practice.

Courts must review settlements for fairness, and class members can usually object before final approval.
