What should I look out for before signing a management contract?
I am a musician starting to get attention and a manager wants to sign me. The contract is long and mentions a commission on “all entertainment income” for five years. What are the red flags?

Management agreements vary widely, so focus on a few key terms:
- Commission rate and base: what percentage, and on gross or net income? Does it cover income you earned before signing?
- Term: how long it lasts and whether there are performance milestones that let you exit if things are not progressing.
- Sunset clause: how long the manager keeps earning on deals after the relationship ends.
- Key person and termination: what happens if your contact leaves the company.
Have your own lawyer review it — not one chosen by the manager. Some places also regulate who can procure work for artists.
This is general information, not legal advice — speak to a licensed lawyer about your situation.
