What counts as discrimination by a government agency?

I believe a local housing office treated my application differently because of my religion. How do I know whether this is illegal discrimination?

Many laws prohibit public bodies from treating people differently because of protected characteristics such as race, religion, sex, national origin or disability. Evidence of discrimination can include:

  • Comments or written statements showing bias.
  • Others in similar situations being treated better.
  • Unexplained departures from normal procedures.

You may be able to file an administrative complaint, a lawsuit, or both, often with short deadlines. Save every letter, email and note of conversations.
