What can I do if I believe police used excessive force against me?

During a traffic stop I was pulled from my car and injured even though I was not resisting. I was released without charges. What steps should I take?

Start by protecting your health and your evidence:

  • Get medical treatment and keep all records and photos of injuries.
  • Write down everything you remember, including officer names or badge numbers, times and locations.
  • Identify witnesses and any video, such as dashcam, bodycam, phone or nearby security footage.

Many places allow a civil claim for violations of constitutional or human rights, as well as an internal complaint. Some claims against public bodies have very short notice deadlines, so talk to a civil-rights lawyer early.

This is general information, not legal advice — speak to a licensed lawyer about your situation.
