Can I upgrade my other-than-honorable discharge?

I was discharged years ago after problems that I now understand were related to PTSD. The discharge is blocking me from benefits. Is an upgrade possible this long after?

Yes, discharge upgrades are possible, and review boards have been directed to give “liberal consideration” to applications where mental health conditions such as PTSD, traumatic brain injury, or experiences of sexual assault may have contributed to the conduct that led to discharge.

Generally, a Discharge Review Board handles applications within a set number of years after separation, and a Board for Correction of Military Records handles older cases. A strong application explains the connection between your condition and the conduct, supported by medical records and personal statements.

Separately, the VA may make its own “character of discharge” determination for benefits, so ask about both routes.
