My VA disability claim was denied — what are my options?

I filed for a back condition I believe started during my service. The decision letter says there is no link to service. I have about a year of records from active duty. What should I do next?

A denial is not the end of the road. In the US system there are generally several review paths after a decision: submitting new and relevant evidence for a fresh look, asking a more senior reviewer to re-examine the same evidence, or appealing to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. Each has its own deadline, commonly one year from the decision letter.

Read the decision carefully. If it says there is no “nexus” to service, the missing piece is often a medical opinion connecting your condition to an in-service event. Service treatment records, buddy statements and a private medical opinion can help fill that gap.

Accredited representatives, including veterans service organizations, can help at no cost, and accredited attorneys can assist with appeals.
