Can I be fired for complaining about harassment at work?

I reported a manager for repeated inappropriate comments. Two weeks later I was moved to a worse shift, and now my hours have been cut. Is that legal?

In many jurisdictions, it is unlawful for an employer to retaliate against an employee for reporting harassment or discrimination in good faith. Retaliation can include termination, but also less obvious actions like demotion, schedule changes, reduced hours, or exclusion — if they would discourage a reasonable person from complaining.

Timing can be significant evidence, though it isn’t conclusive on its own. Write down dates of your complaint, who you told, and each change that followed. Keep copies of schedules, pay slips and relevant messages on a personal device where permitted.

Deadlines for filing complaints with government agencies can be short, so consider speaking to an employment lawyer soon.
