Am I allowed to record police officers in public?

I sometimes film police activity on the street with my phone. Is it legal, and what should I do if an officer tells me to stop?

In many places, recording police performing their duties in public is generally protected, but rules vary and there are limits. You usually must not physically interfere, must keep a reasonable distance, and must follow lawful orders about where to stand.

If an officer tells you to stop, stay calm, avoid physical resistance, and state clearly that you are not interfering. Officers generally should not delete your recordings or seize your phone without proper legal authority, but challenging that is best done afterwards, with a lawyer.

This is general information, not legal advice — speak to a licensed lawyer about your situation.
