What should I check before buying a used boat?
I am buying a second-hand sailing boat from a private seller. It is my first boat. What legal checks should I make?

Common checks include:
- Proof that the seller owns the boat and has the right to sell it
- Whether any loans, liens or charges are registered against it
- Registration or documentation status
- An independent marine survey of condition
- A written bill of sale and purchase agreement
Some boats carry maritime liens that may not be obvious from a basic registry search. A survey and a properly drafted agreement are usually money well spent.
