The other driver’s insurer offered a quick settlement — should I take it?

I was rear-ended last week. My neck and back still hurt and I have physiotherapy booked. The other driver’s insurer called and offered a payment if I sign a release now. Is this a good idea?

Be cautious. A settlement release usually ends your claim permanently, even if your injuries turn out to be worse than expected. Early offers are often made before the full cost of treatment and lost income is known.

Many people wait until they reach “maximum medical improvement” — the point where doctors can say what the long-term picture looks like — before valuing a claim.

You are not obliged to give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer. Keep your medical records, bills and a short diary of symptoms and missed work.

This is general information, not legal advice — speak to a licensed lawyer about your situation.
