The car I just bought keeps breaking down — do I have any rights?
I bought a new car four months ago and it has been back to the dealer five times for the same transmission problem. They keep saying it is fixed. What can I do?

Many places have “lemon laws” or consumer-guarantee rules for new vehicles with serious, recurring defects. These often apply when the same problem has been repaired several times without success, or the car has been out of service for a long period, within a set time after purchase.
Keep every repair order, note the dates the car was in the shop, and put your complaints in writing to the manufacturer as well as the dealer. Remedies can include a replacement vehicle or a refund, and in some places the manufacturer pays your legal fees if you succeed.
