A debt collector is contacting me about a debt I do not recognise
A company keeps calling about an old credit card debt I do not remember having. They are threatening to sue. How should I respond?

Do not admit the debt or make a payment until you know it is valid. In many places you can request written validation: who the original creditor was, the amount, and proof that the collector has the right to collect.
- Send your request in writing and keep a copy.
- Check whether the debt is past the limitation period; in some places even a small payment can restart it.
- Keep a log of calls, including times and what was said.
Collectors who harass, threaten action they cannot take, or misrepresent the debt may be breaking consumer-protection law. If you are actually sued, respond by the court deadline.
