Bankruptcy & Debt
Is debt settlement a better option than bankruptcy?
A company offered to negotiate my debts down for a monthly fee. Is that safer than filing for bankruptcy?

It depends on your situation. Debt settlement can work when you have a lump sum available and only a few creditors, but there are trade-offs:
- Creditors are not required to agree, and they may sue while you save up.
- Fees can be significant, and accounts often go further into default first.
- Forgiven debt may be treated as taxable income in some cases.
Bankruptcy offers court protection and a legal discharge, but it has its own costs and credit effects. A short consultation comparing both paths is usually worthwhile before you sign anything.
This is general information, not legal advice — speak to a licensed lawyer about your situation.
