Do I need a lawyer at mediation?

The mediator says lawyers are optional. Our dispute is about a family property and a fair amount of money. Should I bring one?

It is often optional, but the more money or long-term consequences involved, the more useful legal advice becomes. A lawyer can help you understand your likely outcome if the case went to court, which is the benchmark for judging any offer.

Some people attend alone but consult a lawyer before the session and before signing any settlement. Settlement agreements reached at mediation can be binding, so having them reviewed is wise.

This is general information, not legal advice — speak to a licensed lawyer about your situation.
