Can I see my child’s school records?

I want to review everything the school has on my son, including teacher notes and behaviour reports, before a meeting next month. Do they have to give it to me?

In the US, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) generally gives parents the right to inspect and review their child’s education records held by schools that receive federal funding. Schools usually must respond within a reasonable time and within a set maximum period.

Some materials, such as a teacher’s private notes kept only for their own use, may not count as education records. Other countries have similar data protection or access rights.

Make your request in writing, list the types of records you want, and mention the date of your upcoming meeting so the school can plan ahead.
