A government agency denied my application — how do I appeal?

I applied for a professional license and received a short denial letter. It gives a deadline to “request reconsideration” but I am not sure what that means or whether I should just reapply.

Most agencies have a structured review process, often in stages: internal reconsideration, then an administrative hearing, and finally review by a court. The denial letter usually explains the first step and the deadline.

Deadlines in administrative matters are often short and strictly applied. Missing one can mean losing the right to challenge the decision, so note the date immediately.

  • Ask the agency for the full file or the reasons for the decision.
  • Identify what evidence was missing or what rule was applied.
  • Submit any new evidence with your request.

Reapplying is sometimes an option, but it may not preserve your appeal rights.
