How is child support usually calculated?
We are separating and have two children, ages 4 and 9. I earn more than my partner. I want to understand roughly what to expect before we start negotiating.

Most jurisdictions use a formula or guideline rather than leaving the amount entirely to a judge. The common inputs are:
- Both parents’ incomes (sometimes after tax, sometimes gross)
- The number of children
- How much time the children spend with each parent
- Costs such as childcare, health insurance and special needs
Courts can usually depart from the guideline in unusual circumstances, but the guideline figure is the starting point for most negotiations. Many courts publish an online calculator you can use for a rough estimate.
