Can we get divorced without going to court?

We agree on almost everything — the house, the car, the kids’ schedule. We just want this done quickly and cheaply. Do we really need lawyers and hearings?

Many couples who agree on the main issues can use an uncontested or “joint” divorce process. You still file paperwork with the court, but there may be no contested hearing at all, or only a short one.

Even in an amicable divorce, it is common for each person to have a lawyer review the final agreement. Mistakes in how pensions, retirement accounts or the house are divided can be expensive and hard to undo later.

Mediation is another option if a few points are still open.

Check whether your court offers self-help forms or a family law information centre. They will not advise you, but they can explain the filing steps and timelines.
