Tax
When should I talk to a tax lawyer instead of an accountant?
I have always used an accountant for my small business returns. Are there situations where I should be speaking to a lawyer instead?

Accountants are usually the right choice for routine filings, bookkeeping and tax planning. A tax lawyer may be more appropriate when:
- You are facing an audit with significant amounts at stake or a dispute that may go to tax court.
- There is any risk of penalties for fraud or a criminal investigation.
- You have undisclosed foreign assets or unfiled years.
- You are structuring a major transaction, such as selling a business.
Communications with a lawyer are generally protected by attorney-client privilege, which can matter in sensitive situations. Many people use both professionals working together.
This is general information, not legal advice — speak to a licensed lawyer about your situation.
