How much does it cost to hire a medical malpractice lawyer?
I cannot afford hourly legal fees. I have heard these cases are expensive because of expert witnesses. How do people normally pay for them?

Most patient-side malpractice lawyers work on a contingency fee: they are paid a percentage of any settlement or award, and nothing if there is no recovery. Some jurisdictions cap or scale the percentage for medical cases.
Case costs, such as expert reviews, depositions and record fees, are separate from the fee. Lawyers commonly advance those costs and recover them from the settlement. Ask whether costs come out before or after the percentage is calculated, and what happens to costs if the case is lost.
Get the fee agreement in writing and read it before signing.
