Can I patent an idea for an app?

Ideas on their own generally cannot be patented. Patents protect specific inventions that are new, not obvious, and in a category the law allows. Software-related inventions are patentable in some countries in limited circumstances, but the rules are complex and differ widely.

Before sharing details, consider a non-disclosure agreement and be careful about public disclosure, which can affect your ability to patent later in many countries. Much app value is also protected through copyright in the code, trademarks and trade secrets.
