Can I get out of a contract I signed last week?

I signed a two-year service agreement for my small shop after a sales visit. I’ve since found a much cheaper option and regret signing. Is there a cooling-off period, or am I stuck?

There is no general rule that every contract comes with a cooling-off period. Cancellation rights usually exist only for specific situations — often consumer purchases made at home or away from the seller’s normal premises, or certain regulated products. Business-to-business agreements frequently have no automatic right to cancel.

Start by reading the contract itself. Look for:

  • A cancellation or termination clause and any notice period
  • Early termination fees and how they are calculated
  • Whether any promises made in the sales pitch were left out of the written terms

If the salesperson misrepresented key facts, that can sometimes give grounds to undo the agreement. Otherwise, negotiating an early exit — even with a fee — is often cheaper than a dispute.

This is general information, not legal advice — speak to a licensed lawyer about your situation.
