The Program

Prof. Herbert Hovenkamp
Iowa Law now offers several pathways for foreign-trained lawyers to study U.S. law.

* Master of Laws (LLM)
* 2-Year JD for Foreign-Trained Lawyers
* Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD)

The 2-Year JD for Foreign-Trained Lawyers allows for completion of the Juris Doctor (JD)– the regular U.S. law degree–in as little as 2 years. Unlike an LLM degree, the JD is accepted for practice in all U.S. jurisdictions. Combined with a foreign law degree, the JD opens the door to global legal practice.

The Practice Track of our long-standing LLM Program (Master of Laws) allows students to focus on the skills and courses required by the select number of U.S. jurisdictions that admit foreign-trained lawyers with a U.S. LLM to practice. The Research Track of the LLM Program provides students an opportunity to engage in a research project, producing a master?s thesis under the guidance of a faculty advisor. The LLM can be completed in one year.

The SJD Program is designed for those seeking to do in-depth research on U.S. legal topics or in our areas of special expertise, which include Comparative law, Constitutional law, Anticompetition law, Business and innovation, and International law.

In addition to top faculty, Iowa Law also offers one of the nation?s largest law libraries, including an extensive international collection. With over 1.3 million titles, including a strong collection of works in their native languages, it is the second largest law school library in the United States, twice voted the #1 law library in the nation by National Jurist.

THE IOWA ADVANTAGE
* Exceptional value in a world-class setting.
* Top-ranked faculty teaching issues at the forefront of today’s legal d
